Originally a drummer and percussionist, Matt began studying piano at age 18 when he met jazz studies professor and pianist Darrell Grant while auditioning for the music department at Portland State University. That serendipitous meeting ignited the inspiration for Matt to pursue a new path, becoming a Jazz Piano performance major with Grant as his private instructor.
